Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area was carved out of Alimosho Local Government in October 24, 2003 through the creation of 20 Local Goverments and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

Ayobo-Ipaja is a compound name derived from two major towns comprising about 54 towns and villages whose natives first settled down over three centuries ago, hence, the gesture to name the Local Government after the two (2) major towns.

Ayobo-Ipaja Local Government is located in the western side of Lagos State, it is bounded by Mosan-Okunola Local Government on the East, Ogun State on the West and North, and Egbe/Idimu Local Government in the South.
